svchost exe eating cpu resources

svchost.exe eating CPU resources

I just "successfully" installed build 5384 on my Dell laptop but I find that two processes of svchost.exe are eating up 100% of CPU resources. One of them is registered as being launched under my user name and the other one was launched by NETWORK SERVICE.
Disabling SSDP Discovery service only managed to kill the process that started under my username, but the network service is still running.
Nothing
I can do and no process or service I can stop or disable lets me make the system usable.
Additional info: This seems like a Broadcom network card compatibility problem because when I load Control Panel, i get a I get an error message that Broadcom ASF can't start because the system is busy.
The services that are associated with this instance of svchost.exe are: Cryptographic service DNS client Function Discovery Provider host Network Location Awareness Terminal services
I don't need to use my network card; I'd be fine with just using my built-in Intel wireless card to access my network.
Any help would be greatly appreciated; if i can't resolve this, this computer's going to be totally out of comission until MS resolves this.

Hey AP,
i had the same problem just 1 hour ago, but i think i've found the reason now. At first i had disabled all network-devices and tried a lot to solve the problem, but nothing brought the excepted result.
Do you have NOD32 installed? I don't know why, but since I've uninstalled it my PC works 100% with Vista Beta as OS

NeoX2K5,
Thanks so much for you response.
What is NOD32 and how do I uninstall it?
Do you have a Dell Lattitude D610 with a Broadcom network card? Or do you hava different configuration?

NOD32 is an AntiVirus - Application. Which AntiVir do you have installed?
No, i have no Dell Computer and my WLAN-Card manufacturer is SiteCom.
If I were you than I would try to uninstall any software that controls you're Internet - Connection (just like an AntiVir or Firewall). I think that there is an incompatibility with one of those Software - Components.

AP you can try turning off Network location awareness in windows services. i had an issue like the one you are stating with a Dell D610 at work i was testing on

I can't even get into Services to turn it off! This is crazy - my computer is absolutely crawling right now.
OK, I just turned Network Location Awareness & Network List Service to manual & rebooted (I had to boot into Safe Mode to even open the Services page). I'm still getting those two svchost.exe entries that are using 60-65% and 30-35% of the CPU cycles. Sysinternal's Process Explorer says the first one (60-65%) is for "Cryptographic services, DNS client, Function Discovery Provider Host, Network Location Awareness, Telephony, and Terminal Services", and the second one (30-35%) is for "COM+ Event System, Function Discover Resource Publication, Network List Service, Network Store Interface Service, SSDP Discovery, Thread Ordering Servier, UPnP Device Host, WebClient, Windows Drive Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework, Windows Time, WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service, and Workstation". Phew, those little suckers are busy! But why are they taking so many CPU cycles (and not letting me do anything else!!)???
Thanks for any suggestions. I'm open to them...
